Chaweng Beach in the northeast is perhaps the most popular of Samui's beaches, but as a result can sometimes feel crowded in high season. The road behind the beach caters to all tastes, with family restaurants, exclusive eateries and even fast food outlets, as well as wild nightclubs and chilled lounge bars.

Longtail Boat, Ko Samui

Lamai on the East coast was the first tourist destination in Samui but is generally quieter, though with a slightly less attractive town. However as you move inland into the beautiful valley of Greater Lamai the lanscape is stunning. Lamai is also famous for its Wat and two of the best spas on the island.

Maenem to the North has great views of Ko Pha Ngan and sheltered waters, and since the sand here is golden and not white it has attracted far less development than Lamai or Chaweng, offering a quieter and more authentic feel to the beach. Futher east is Bophut or the fishermans village, with a laid back, traditional vibe.

If you wish to escape to a secluded bay, Choeng Mon to the north of Chaweng offers a great escape for some peace and quiet. There's no real town here but a handful of restaurants and shops if you get hungry.

For a quieter time yet, Lipa Noi on the west coast offers stunning sunsets and real getaway from the tourist scene - it is very quiet and romantic, and for a moment you can feel alone despite being in such a famous destination.

Koh Samui Marine Park

Away from the beaches you can snorkel, dive or swim in the Angthong Marine Park and discover rainforests, wildlife and beautiful sea creatures. If you're not a fan of deep water you can head to the Samui Aquarium for a chance to view tropical fish and turtles without getting your feet wet.

In the centre of the island is a jungle with impressive waterfalls which can be best discovered with a local guide or driver, and hidden away are a number of beautiful gardens. The jungle is a great place for trekking - whether on foot or with elephants - or some bird watching, with several rare species to be found.
